Introduction and Course Description
Welcome to E-Commerce Technologies! This course provides a comprehensive
and practical guidance on how companies can get the most out of the web and Internet
technologies to meet their business goals.
The rapidly increasing adoption of the Internet technology by
both consumers and businesses makes it imperative that all organizations must
have a web and mobile presence to survive in today’s economy. The issue now is
not to decide on whether to have an online presence or not, but on how to
deploy their businesses online.
The aim of this course is to provide you with a comprehensive
guide to the concepts, techniques and best practice to support e-commerce
applications and exploit opportunities of conducting business online while
minimizing the risks.
A basic course in
web programming such as CMSC 100 or IT 210 is a prerequisite for this course.
This course consists of three
units and ten modules.
Unit I
discusses the introduction and basic concepts in e-business and e-commerce. It
also reviews the relationship between the Internet and other media.
Unit II describes the current technology
and practical approaches to implementing e-commerce applications. It explains
how an online presence is developed to support customer welfare and services.
It also introduces business-to-consumer Internet marketing concepts.
Unit III
tackles issues and technology used to implement business-to-business commerce.
It also describes the characteristics of digital media and various aspects of
communications to be considered for a successful online campaign.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course, you should be able to:
a) assess how the Internet can be
used in different business applications;
b) complete an online marketplace
analysis to assess the use of Internet as part of strategy development;
c) design and implement an
e-commerce/e-business application;
d) develop an appropriate process to
collect measures for e-commerce effectiveness; and,
e) conduct a research related to
e-commerce processes and strategies.
Course Outline
The entire
course is divided into three units. Each
unit is further divided into modules as follows:

Unit II: TECHNOLOGY AND APPLICATIONS

Unit III: B2B E-COMMERCE AND DEPLOYMENT ISSUES
Module 7: Online Retail and Services
Module 8: Online Content and Media
Module 9: Supply Chain Management and Collaborative
Commerce
Module 10: Ethical, Social and Political Issues in
E-Commerce
Grading
Scheme and Course Requirements
Your final grade will be computed based
on your performance in the following:

If you were caught cheating in
this course, the policy below will be followed:
- for the first offense, the student will receive a score of zero (0) for the exam;
- for the second offense, the student will receive a final grade of 5.0 for the course.
